What you do is you hit q and equip it at the same time. This only happens if you are wearing the same category of armour. For example (Boots) and you drop boots.

What platform do you play on (Win10, Xbox, Switch, iOS, Android or PS4) and what version of Minecraft are you using? I play on Android But I use keyboard and mouse. 1.18
