Remove the map variant feature

In the new Hide and Seek update, map variants were introduced. This means that blocks are placed differently on maps in different games. In my (and in a large portion of the community’s) opinion, this should be removed.

Example of map variants

Why this should be removed:

It confuses experienced players.

People have memorised every hide and seek map. This feature means their memory of every hide and seek map is gone, which can lead to confusion.

Experienced players will spend multiple hours (potentially days) memorising new variants.

The addition of map variants means the best hide and seek players have to spend potentially thousands of games memorising the map variants, which makes the game frustrating for those players.

It relies more on luck than skill.

The new variants means that the game relies more on luck due to the randomness of the variants.

It encourages people to cheat.

A lot of sweats resorted to using ESP hacks instead of learning off the new variants, which not only ruins the point of the game, but makes it unfair to legitimate players. (Yes, I know they can get banned, but when there are hundreds of them and it’s not exactly clear to most of the playerbase, it’s likely that a large amount of them will go unpunished).

Thank you for reading. If you liked the suggestion, make sure to vote it, as that can help get this idea accepted and it means more people can view this post.

didnt see this was already suggested. sry

Just learn all the variants

Highly disagree, map variants allow for hiders to have a chance. I don’t want to spend 100s of hours to memorize maps just to compete. The skill of hide and seek is to not look out of place, and to spot people that are out of place.

New players shouldn’t be at a disadvantage simply because they haven’t play alot.

For example, if I’m fully experienced with Minecraft then play a game of SG, then I’m not really at a disadvantage. But the same isn’t applied to HnS. I’m not good at Bedwars because I’ve memorized every single item in the item shop, I’m good because I used strategy and skill to my advantage.

I see what you’re trying to say - variants make it more likely for blocks to survive. However, there are other alternatives to this - adding new maps, encouraging running as a playstyle, reducing the map selection in the voting screen, adding more hider mechanics (jumpsolid), adding more realistic blocks to hide as, making small maps bigger, etc.

Map variants are a) confusing to everyone (why is this here, this wasn’t here before?), b) bad for player growth (lower skill ceiling), c) frustrating to everyone who’s learned the maps and d) lazy - they could have added new maps, but instead they just added different versions of existing ones - I feel so cheated lol.

Also, saying “bedwars items” and “strategy and skill” in the same sentence is wild, unless there’s a “not” somewhere.

Voted! I liked the old map versions. This update to me was completely unexpected and my theory is that they are slowly update each game. I’m predicting bridge is next, then gravity then blockdrop, then groundwars.

Yes I agree that this confuses people, even me. It feels strange to play different types of the same map. But I think this was meant to make the game a little more difficult instead of it being super easy. I’m guessing they’re trying to stop the game from being too easy to win

That was just an example, obviously Bedwars isn’t balanced. But if it was it would apply.

That’s a lot worse imo.

While I like a lot of solutions you listed. It’s not likely those get added at this point. And removing variants would just bring back the problem fully.

Imo that’s not really am issue, all anyone would need to do is use their brain a little.

This change makes people search for blocks that look out of place, instead of just knowing where blocks should and shouldn’t be.

While there are many pros and cons. Imo the pros outway the cons.

The best solution for this is to outright remove variants, or to just keep them. But to change the variants to be more distinct from each other.

Instead of jumbling around the bookshelves, what if they get replaced with some shrubs.

This way it’s still possible to memorize and distinguish the variants. But it also provides for more to memorize, and would make it harder to instantly know which blocks are fake.

(They definitely won’t do that tho)

So because sweats like you can’t easily win the game because you memorized every spot, you want them to change it?

No, heavily agree with @NotYoshi2

I disagree with this, because its now sweatproof (at least for like a week) and if you want it to not be sweatproof then I suggest you: Dont sweat hide and seek

Variants will not stop people from sweating - already, AnimalManx2084 has memorized more than half of them (its been less than a day), and others are making similar progress. I’ve gotten the chinatown ones down and am learning the boardwalk one. Variants are significantly easier to learn than new maps, while offering no advantage over a new map. Additionally, with the addition of variants, ESPers are more common than ever. Variants are clearly not solving the sweatification problem - they’re just delaying it by around 2ish months.

There are other, better ideas for reducing sweats. All of these involve increasing the skill ceiling in some way, instead of just being confusing.

  • add more maps
  • make easy-to-seek maps bigger (kingston, plasma, tala, pripyat
  • add more blocks to maps
  • add dropsolid/jumpsolid
  • make hiding fun
  • reduce the number of options you have when voting for maps

Finally, if you want less sweats in hide and seek, please remember to ask them to remove the seeker speed - running is the most casual way to play the game and they directly protect poor innocent blocks from evil sweaty seekers.

Removing variants lowers the skill gap, as it makes it easy to learn maps. Plus variants makes the game less repetitive without a bunch of work needed for full new maps

Not everyone here is a sweat, I’m level 80 and I’m not even sweat at this game

A lot of people judge people based on there level and level doesn’t define skill sometimes

I think the hive team should consider both opinons on this post and come to a decistion. (Sorry, I suck at spelling, and I’m not a child.

That is true, but most high-level people are.

When im in a bedwars lobby and i see a prestige, they are usual a sweat.

Map variants are bad. It’s an interesting way to try keeping the game casual, but unfortunately it just means ESP is a requirement for grinding - a better way to reduce sweats is to make the game more complicated (block buyables <3, jump solid, make small maps larger, etc) and reduce the amount of map options you can vote to 3. Map variants are just a massive middle finger to anyone who loved your game enough to learn a map, and even more-so those who learned multiple. Please revert, this is horrid.

On top of that, i don’t see the point of adding map variants. Talking as the first lvl 50 Melon block, seeking was the main way to play the game because hiding didn’t have any purpose, any progression ( block levels ) or any special mechanic ( jump/drop solid ). Some hider mains chose to run ( which you stopped with the speed boost at the end ), some chose to seek. Seeking use memory as its main skill, not talking about the different tools used nowaydays, if you change every map by giving it variant, where is the fun of the game ? What is the point to keep playing ? First it removes every memory work done previously by seekers and second, it doesn’t give another opportunity to play the game by adding more depth than relearning every map. Remove variants if you don’t want your active community to become inactive.

Or maybe they just want to make the game fun, you dont HAVE to esp to grind the game, as someone who has heavilty criticized hives decision making over the last few years, I think the new hide and seek update is good, it makes the game more interesting, not to mention parties cheated/boosted before anyways and will continue to do so, youre making a big deal out of nothing

The variants aren’t that different anyways, you’ll get used to them really quick and have no problem with it later on. This is not an issue at all, just give this change some time
