Town of Salem Game Mode

Idea:

Town of Salem type game mode

More information:

Create a new game mode like Town of Salem.

Town of Salem is a murder mystery game somewhat similar to mafia. There are regular townsfolk, as well as murderers. However, each player, townsfolk and murderer, has a specific role that has its own ability. These abilities are used by townsfolk to figure out who the murderers are and stop them from murdering, and they are used by the murderers to deceive the townsfolk about their true identities. Each night, the players use their abilities, and the murderers eliminate one player. Each day, everyone sees who was murdered. Then, the alive players discuss what happened and can choose to vote someone out. This process repeats until there are no townsfolk or murderers remaining.

Examples of townsfolk roles: Investigator, Doctor, Bodyguard

Examples of Murderer roles: Framer, Blackmailer, Godfather

Conclusion:

Basically, this is a request to create a new murder mystery game mode (similar to / based off of Town of Salem) that is more complex, includes the use of abilities, and encourages discussion, contemplation, and strategy.

There’s no need to make an entire gamemode that’s “who’s the murderer” when there’s already a game that’s “who’s the murderer”.
But, I could see this becoming a new gamemode for MM. Maybe “Murder mystery for pros”? However, the day mechanic seems lengthy and boring, and the “vote” mechanic is very similar to another game… cough cough among us cough cough
So, yeah, could do with a few alterations.

Hey Thomas,

Thanks so much for your input. Perhaps it could be a new game mode for murder mystery. Although, I think that there would be enough differences between the two to constitute something new. I see the current murder mystery game mode as a more fast-paced murder game, whereas this would probably be something more drawn out due to kill pace, discussion, voting, and strategy.

Also, in regard to the day mechanic skepticism, the day period and night period don’t need to last too long, certainly not the length of a natural minecraft day/night - just enough time to chat and vote at day, then use abilities at night, like in Town of Salem.

Also, I’m not entirely certain of your point about the voting. Are you saying that voting would be a bad idea because in Among Us there is voting? To be fair, voting is part of many murder mystery games, and I think it would be an interesting addition and lead to more complex game-play.

If any alterations need to be made due to logistical needs or player interest, I would definitely support that. I simply think a murder mystery game with more features, like in Town of Salem, would be very interesting.

Whilst I really love the idea, the game just doesn’t seem to fit in Hive’s genre of minigames for the average player base.

Hive already had a Mafia-based original on their Java server called “Trouble in Mineville”. However it was not added to their Bedrock servers because “it was too complicated” and it’s probably the same for your suggestion.

I also believe we don’t need another genre of these kind of games. I just think you could play actual games made by indie developers for better results than a Minecraft clone.

Hi Ayaan,

Thank you for your comment and insight. I wasn’t aware that they already tried something like this on Java. I wonder if they previously considered adding something like my suggestion.

I’m not so sure that the average player wouldn’t be interested in a more complex, discussion based murder mystery game. Although, I do see your point that it could be too similar to the current murder mystery game mode to warrant a completely new type of game. Perhaps it could be an add-on to the murder mystery game mode we have now, just to offer players a slower-paced version that involves more strategy and involvement.

You can see how TIMV is played here

Yeah the current Hive player community is younger so Hive tried to make their games easy to understand.
Also I don’t think communication and votes are a good idea actually. See just build’s vote system and how meh spammers take advantage of that, I guess the same thing might happen as well if mm had votes system. Also for communication, Bedrock players tend to speak less as I seldom see players talk in mm, even in other games

Hello Crystalline,

Thanks for the information and your comment.

I definitely see what you mean about voting being problematic. Although, the difference between my idea and the build game mode in this regard is that people abusing their vote in the build game mode helps them win, whereas, in my game mode idea, it would be more beneficial for players to vote wisely, if they want to win for the xp.

I do understand your comment about communication, and it would be a problem if players didn’t communicate enough. However, this game mode is unique in the fact that it is based on communication and strategy, so it is possible that this would encourage players to use the chat more. It could be that people don’t use the chat often in certain current game modes because there doesn’t seem the need. Also, there could perhaps be some chatting short-cuts added so that players don’t need to spend a lot of time typing. I know that some console players have a problem with that, so maybe that would be beneficial.
