I am aware that the topic of Hive exclusive capes is not new, however most people’s ideas on how they could or should be implemented seems a little convoluted. I propose a simple yet effective solution that also addresses some concerns.
Common concerns players have regarding this topic:
- Will my own capes not be wearable on the Hive anymore if cape cosmetics are added?
- How can I tell the difference between a player who has earned or bought a Hive cape and someone who is wearing a custom cape designed to imitate it? Wouldn’t this de-value Hive capes entirely if people can just replicate them?
The Hive should have global cape cosmetics, and they should be treated similarly to other cosmetics such as hats, costumes, pets, etc. But these capes should ONLY be equippable to costumes. This is necessary to be able to distinguish between player owned capes and Hive-earned capes. Currently capes are not equippable to costumes in any capacity (with the exception of Death Run). Implementing the functionality for wearing Hive capes exclusively with the Hive’s costumes will allow players to keep and use their own capes on the network, while also allowing for Hive exclusive capes to exist and have value.
Now that I’ve gone over how global cape cosmetics can exist without causing conflicts, I can discuss how this type of cosmetic should be handled in terms of distribution. At it’s core, capes are a status symbol and should be treated like one. For starters, obviously an earnable cape (e.g. through leveling up in a game) should never be purchasable with Minecoins, and vis versa. There should be a healthy variety of capes to choose from so that you don’t see too many players wearing the same cape but at the same time not an overwhelming amount of variety that makes the capes feel unvaluable. Let’s take the monthly costume system for example, the costumes are too frequent to really be memorable
or hold that much value as a status symbol, if you showed me a monthly costume and asked me which year it was released I could not tell you. This is fine and works well for the costume system, but this kind of mass-production can destroy the value and ‘feel’ of capes regardless of if they are ‘earned’. Publishing cape cosmetics should be handled with care and intention to maintain it’s high-value status. A hypothetical solution for this specific scenario of “mass-production” could be bi-yearly releases rather than monthly, maybe twice a year just skip the monthly costume and replace it with a fun cape cosmetic instead. (Obviously this would not be the only way to obtain them, just spit-balling some ideas.)
Cape cosmetics (if added) would promote and encourage the usage of costumes more.
I hope this kind of design philosophy is considered if global cape cosmetics are ever implemented.
