Once prestige comes to BedWars, (hopefully season 4) players should get a new armor skin for each prestige. This allows players to get armor skins without needing to spend money.
they are almost certainly already making free to play armor skins, as they do with all in game cosmetics, however i see it coming from the challenge shop, and not prestige, or they add more level based unlocks.
