Discord Rule #3

Idea:
Clarify in the text of rule #3 what isn’t appropriate in a name, status, avatar, and banner.

More info:
Could be more specific in what is allowed and not acceptable. It may help in removing a lot of gray areas.

We’re certainly open to making it clearer but I am a little confused about what exactly you’re suggesting; it would be near impossible to list everything that isn’t allowed here.

Having a specific list would likely actually cause more issues than it solves in that when something isn’t listed, players would flaunt the rule by arguing that it isn’t listed in the rules.

I’d personally argue that this rule comes down to common sense and that our staff team exercises their discretion when enforcing it.

It isn’t necessary to list everything that isn’t allowed on the discord server, that is true as many things are subject to common sense, but in my experience I think it would be better for staff to warn players if they have an inappropriate banner, status, etc, rather than banning them first. I have seen users having inappropriate words in their statuses, for example, and forget that one of the servers they’re in has a rule against it, or don’t even know that Hive has a rule against it. I have been banned once before for having an inappropriate word in my status, without any warning, simply because I forgot it was there. An exception to this would be a slur, for obvious reasons. I hope you can understand where I am coming from. :slightly_smiling_face:

Wherever possible, our staff already warn users before issuing punishments for inappropriate avatars, statuses, etc.

I also don’t think a list is necessary, and it wasn’t my intention to suggest such a thing to be added.

What I suggest is for it to be worded something along the lines of:
Use an appropriate username, avatar, and status message. Avoid using excessive language, sexually suggestive, homophobic, etc.

It could help others to use their common sense better if they had these examples.
I hope this cleared up any confusion!

The rules also state that they are subject to common sense (rule 12)
