If you place your autobridger during the grace period, it stays there as a nether reactor core. You can mine it and the item you pick up is labeled “nether reactor core.” When you place the mined core after grace period, it disappears.
Also I’m not sure if this is an intended feature, but a spell of shielding doesn’t save you from pearl/fall damage.
